What is the CMQ/OE certification?
The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) is a certification from the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Unlike more technical ASQ credentials, the CMQ/OE is built for professionals who lead quality functions, teams, and strategic improvement initiatives. It tests leadership, organizational culture, strategic planning, and change management alongside core quality management tools.
Eligibility requirements & experience waivers
ASQ requires 10 years of on-the-job experience in one or more CMQ/OE Body of Knowledge areas, with at least 5 of those years in a decision-making position (defined as having the authority to define, execute, or control projects or processes, not just participate in them).
Formal education waives part of the experience requirement:
| Education | Experience waived |
|---|---|
| Technical or trade school diploma | 1 year |
| Associate degree | 2 years |
| Bachelor's degree | 4 years |
| Master's or doctorate | 5 years |
All experience must be full-time and paid. Internships and unpaid roles don't count toward the requirement.

Study tips
- Don't treat this as a technical quality-tools exam. A large share of questions test leadership judgment and organizational scenarios, not calculations.
- Study Leadership and Quality Management Tools first. Together with Strategic Plan Development and Deployment, they carry the heaviest question load.
- Practice explaining quality concepts in business terms (cost, value, customer impact). CMQ/OE questions are written from a manager's perspective, not a technician's.
- Use full-length timed practice tests to build stamina for the 4-hour-plus exam window.
- Review every explanation, especially for questions you got right by guessing. The goal is understanding the reasoning, not memorising the answer key.
